WHAT FILE FORMATS DO YOU ACCEPT?
Memories Xpress accepts PDF files only for print purposes. Please make sure your file is high resolution (300 dpi) with fonts embedded. The file should also include bleeds. Since fonts and graphics are embedded in the PDF file, you won’t have problems with fonts or graphics shifting or different fonts being substituted when we print.
WHAT SHOULD THE RESOLUTION OF GRAPHICS AND PHOTOS BE?
To ensure that graphics and photos do not look grainy when printed, please ensure that they are at least 300 dpi. Computer screens have 72 dpi resolution, so even though the photo may look good on your screen does not mean it will look good when printed. Be aware that enlarging a photo will reduce the resolution and reduction a photo will increase the resolution.
SHOULD MY GRAPHICS BE SET TO CMYK OR RGB?
RGB (red, green, blue) is a standard format used by digital cameras, scanners, video monitors, and television screens. However, the printing process uses CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black). Colors will shift when converted from RGB to CMYK, so we recommend that you convert to CMYK before printing to ensure the graphic looks correct. Colors will look different when converted.
WILL FINAL PRINTED DOCUMENTS MATCH MY COMPUTER SCREEN OR LASER PRINTOUTS?
We print exclusively on digital presses using a pleasing color standard, which means that without seeing the original, the colors look good. To keep our prices low, we cannot match PMS colors or other exact colors. Images on computer screens are rendered in RGB and our presses print in CMYK, which may make colors look slightly different.
HOW MUCH MARGIN SHOULD BE INCLUDED ON DOCUMENTS?
Do not place text or critical graphics too close to the edge of the document, especially on the bound edge. We recommend at least one half inch on all four sides of the document, plus an additional one quarter inch on the bound edge. With perfect binding, plastic coil binding, and wire-o binding, approximately 1/8 inch will be used for the binding. On perfect bound books, make sure that text is not too close to the bound edge or readers may try to break the spine to read the book.
HOW DO I FIGURE OUT THE SIZE OF THE SPINE FOR A PERFECT BOUND BOOK?
It is best to submit covers for perfect bound books as three different files — front cover, back cover, and spine. Be sure to include 1/8 inch bleed on all three files.
To calculate spine size, use this formula (please come back to the help center when calculating your spine):
For 60# uncoated text, 70# matte and gloss text, and 80# matte and gloss text:
Number of pages divided by 440 = spine in inches
For 70# uncoated text and 100# matte and gloss text:
Number of pages divided by 370 = spine in inches
The cover should be included in the total number of pages when calculating pricing. If adding text to the spine, make sure that it is smaller than the width of the spine. There should be some blank space on both sides so that the text does not run exactly to the spine’s edge.
HOW ARE PAGES COUNTED?
Pages should be counted just like pages in a book, not sheets of paper. A sheet of paper with printing on both sides would be counted as two pages. Our calculators assume that you are printing on both sides of the sheet of paper. If you want one sided printing, please contact us at [email protected] for special pricing.
WHAT IS A BLEED?
A bleed is an area beyond the actual size of the document used to ensure that printing goes to the edge of the page. Our cutters cannot cut exactly on the edge of a page, so graphics extend beyond the edge and are then cut down to size. Pages should have an 1/8 inch bleed on all four sides. For example, if your document is 8.5 x 11, it should be designed as 8.75 x 11.25.
In addition to the bleed, design with the safety area in mind. Most printing is done on larger sheets of paper and cut to size. Cutters cannot cut exactly at the same place on each page. Thus it is important to have some room between any text and critical graphics and the edge of the page. Allow at least 1/8 inch for the safety area.
IS THERE AN ADDITIONAL CHARGE FOR PAGES WITH BLEEDS?
Although printers routinely charge up to 20% extra for bleeds, Memories Xpress does not charge extra for this service. The prices on our instant pricing calculators include pages that bleed.
CAN YOU PRINT PERFECT BOUND BOOKS WITH HARD COVERS?
No, we do not offer hard covers for perfect bound books at this time.
CAN YOU PRINT LANDSCAPE BOOKS?
For perfect bound, plastic coil, and wire-o books, we can bind as a landscape book up to the size of 8.5 x 11. For saddle stitch books, we can bind as a landscape book up to the size of 6 x 9.
WHAT IF I NEED A SIZE OTHER THAN THE STANDARD SIZES LISTED ON YOUR CALCULATORS (5.5 x 8.5, 6 x 9, and 8.5 x 11)?
If the finished size of your document is between the sizes listed (5.5 x 8.5 and 8.5 x 11), select the next largest size. Be sure to indicate the actual finished size in the comments section when ordering. For example, a document with a size of 7 x 10 would use the 8.5 x 11 pricing.
For perfect bound and saddle stitch printing, the largest print size is 8.5 x 11. For plastic coil and wire-o printing, we can print up to 11 x 17 inches as long as the bound side is the 11 inch side. For documents over 8.5 x 11, contact us at [email protected] for a special quote.

WHAT IS THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF COPIES THAT CAN BE ORDERED?
For multipage documents, the minimum is 25 and you can then order in increments of 1 copy. For single page documents, the minimum is generally 100 copies and you can then order in increments of 1 copy.

HOW ARE FILES UPLOADED FOR MY ORDER?
Files can be submitted in three ways:

WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY PDF PROOF?
You will be notified via email when your PDF proof is ready for viewing, typically within one day of placing your order. Even if you have selected the hard cope press proof, you must first approve the PDF proof.
SHOULD I GET A HARD COPY PRESS PROOF?
We recommend getting a hard copy press proof if you are concerned about your paper or binding choices or have concerns about your files. The press proof is printed on the paper you selected using the binding you ordered, so you will see exactly how the finished product will look. Hard copy press proofs are typically shipped one business day after PDF proof approval.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PRINT ONCE MY PROOF IS APPROVED?
Multipage documents will print in 4 business days after proof approval (weekends and holidays are not counted), while single page documents print in 3 business days. For a reasonable additional charge, production times can be expedited to 3, 2, or 1 day. Please note that 1 day service is not same day service.
HOW LONG WILL SHIPPING TO ME TAKE?
All orders are shipped from our production facility in Madison Heights, Michigan, via UPS ground service. Depending on your location, it can take from 1 to 4 days in shipping. You can also select 3 day, 2 day, and overnight shipping. When placing your order, please indicate when you need to receive the order so we can ensure that with the options you selected, you will receive it in time. If not, we will contact you to discuss alternatives.
CAN I CHANGE MY FILE IF I FIND ERRORS?
You can submit new files if you have not approved your proof. Once you approve your proof, the files are sent immediately to print. In that case, call us to see if we can stop the production process so you can send a new file.
WHAT ARE PAYMENT TERMS FOR MY ORDER?
Orders must be paid in full as part of the ordering process. We will not start printing without full payment. You can pay via credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover) or via PayPal.
DO YOU HAVE A GUARANTEE?
Yes, we have a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you are not happy with your printed order, simply contact us and we will either reprint the order or refund your entire purchase price.
